Gum disease affects longevity

Periodontal Bone/Gum disease and your overall health

Feb 18 • 1 minute read

Periodontal bone/gum disease is a silent killer.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is amount the leading causes of death, responsible for over 3.9 million deaths in Europe alone.  CVD can lead to stroke and hypertension which then leads to heart failure.  Periodontal bone/gum disease affects 11% of the worlds population and is the sixth most common human disease.

There is now a significant body of scientific evidence associating periodontal bone/gum disease and several other chronic human diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, COPD and chronic kidney disease.  It is thought that the bacteria causing periodontal disease causes inflammation which in turn leads to other disease conditions.

Inflammation which causes an increase in C-reactive proteins upsets the body's natural rhythms leading to abnormal cell functions causing disease to occur.

You can prevent and reduce your risks of many diseases by keeping the "gateway" to your body healthy and disease free.  Visiting your dentist at least twice per year for gum evaluation and teeth cleaning is one way to help improve and maintain good health.  If you have been diagnosed with periodontal bone/gum disease it is important to complete necessary treatment and keep to your recommended maintenance schedule.  Periodontal bone/gum disease cannot be cured but can be managed quite well between your dentist and your conscientious adherence to a good program of home care.  Close self examination is important to evaluate are there spaces in between your teeth or are the spaces filled with calculus (tartar), if no spaces you are past due to be seen by your dentist.  At that time an evaluation of your home care habits will be undertaken so that you can upgrade your daily home care-this is the key to controlling periodontal bone/gum disease.

I hope this information is helpful.  If you have questions or wish to visit my office for an evaluation, please give me a call at 248304-1385.  Thank You
